The beginning of my Pista ng Mapa X State of the Map Asia 2022 experience started on the event's second day. After a long night of air travel, I was greeted by the beauty and magnificence of the Mayon Volcano. Unfortunately, she was shy then and covered the upper part of her beauty, including the opening. Nonetheless, she was stunning. Then I was on to Bicol University, specifically East Campus, where the conference was held. After a quick wardrobe change, I was ready to experience Pista ng Mapa 2022.

When I arrived, everything was ready. The volunteers and organizers were very helpful when I registered myself. I received my bag of goodies and a beautifully designed shirt. I needed to prepare for the conference setup when I entered the venue. It was the usual "school auditorium" look, but there was a detailed thought of simplicity and elegance. I also love the arch with Filipino-related items, such as a farmer's hat and fans. The caterer's where preparing the meals. Finding the best seat for me, I situate myself and prepare for Day 2.

And on my first day, I achieved one of my goals. What was the goal? The goal was to learn something new about GIS. And I did. It was about countermapping. That simple mention from the first plenary talk of the day piques my attention. It helped that Ulirat Ph also talked about countermapping and how they utilized that with their talk, "Countermapping through Collectivism ."From the two talks, my eyes open how mapping isn't just for guidance or presentation, the way we use it in my organization, but a tool for justice and evidence of the truth.

Another mind-opening topic I enjoyed was Sir Ben Hur Pintor's Why You Shouldn't Use QGIS: New and Upcoming Features (2022 Edition). A little background on why I love this topic. When I realized I was chosen as a scholar, my first thought was, "Oh No, I am only using QGIS. These individuals may use ArcGis, Supergeo, and other paid and fancier GIS ." So, when Sir Ben started his hilariously sarcastic talk and spoke about the purpose of this free event, I began to feel more confident knowing that these professionals and experts also use QGIS. Thus, it encourages me to continue to explore and improve my GIS skills. It was then that I realized that I shouldn't be afraid to say that I use free, open-source systems and applications because I won't be here without them. Besides, I can get the job done with it. It felt lighter from then on.

After listening to more talks on different applications and impacts of GIS on their lives and the community they serve, I felt more inspired to continue on this path. I may not make it my primary career. Still, I can be a contributor, an ambassador, and a beacon for the next generation of mappers. Speaking of people, I was amazed by the mixed audience attending the conference. I saw many youths and a handful of adults and mature individuals. I did not expect such diversity, but from what I learned during Pista ng Mapa, mapping has been around and utilized for decades, if not centuries and millennia. Thus, the range of ages and expertise is just true and correct. This a reflection that mapping will always be here and will always need everyone and anyone interested to show and tell the world.

That's my first day at Pista ng Mapa X State of the Map Asia 2022.

P.S: Love the food served by the catering Service, Charisma.
